Welcome to Carroll Mansion, in partnership with Poe Baltimore

In preparation for the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026 (America 250,) Poe Baltimore has partnered with Carroll Museums on a series of exhibits sharing Baltimore’s unique history. Explore 200 years of history at the home of the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence, discover the mysterious circumstances of Edgar Allan Poe’s death in Baltimore in 1849, and experience one of three remaining shot towers in the United States.

Guided tours are available on Saturday and Sundays between 11AM – 4PM. The last tour begins at 3pm. Phoenix Shot Tower is open for drop-in tours only, May thru November.

The Poe Death Exhibit

Poe’s body and casket lie in state in a re-enactment of the dark and somber day Poe was laid to rest. Tour the various conspiracies that plague Poe’s legacy and learn how the very clothes he wore offer clues to his mysterious death. Pay your respects at a special candle-light vigil for the master of horror and mystery.

The Raven Room

A 20-foot mural by Michael Kirby of Murals of Baltimore depicts Poe’s “ominous bird of yore,” blending classic and contemporary art. Surrounding this striking mural are 26 iconic, sequential illustrations by French artist, Gustave Doré, completed just months before his death.

Carroll Mansion

Explore the winter home of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last living and only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Follow the mansion’s evolution after Carroll’s death into a saloon, immigrant tenement, vocational school, and recreation center.

Phoenix Shot Tower

Experience the Phoenix Shot Tower, which was once the tallest building in the United States. Built in 1828, it annually manufactured 2.5 million pounds of “drop” shot and is only one of three remaining shot towers in the country. Drop in access available 10am-12pm, guided tours on Saturday and Sundays at 4pm.

Discover the remarkable connection between Edgar Allan Poe and the great Marquis de Lafayette. A life-sized diorama and historical exhibit transport you through pivotal moments in American history, shedding light on forgotten heroes, showcasing the Poe family’s profound contributions to the founding of the nation, and later their grandson’s writing fame which revolutionized literature forever.

Know Before You Go

The mansion and shot tower are precious historic sites with steep stairs and no elevators, which means it may not be suitable for all guests. Additionally, the death exhibit contains death and funeral imagery, including a body in an open casket, which may not be suitable for young children. Viewer discretion is advised.

Limited metered parking on Front Street at the Shot Tower Light Rail Station; pay-to-park garages within one block of the venue on President Street and Lombard.
